Lake Wainamu Is one of Auckland’s a bit of a hidden paradises, before Pedey bought it up I hadn’t heard of it. So was very eager to check it out.
As you drive to Bethells beach car park it’s a couple of hundred meters on the left. Walking up a short track (or alternatively the stream) will lead you to a huge sand dune, or a flock of dunes? Who knows, either way it’s a huge amount of black sand. If you continue walking over the dunes you will make your way to Lake Wainamu.
We choose to walk anti clockwise around the lake. At the top of the lake their is the stream which fills it. This stream contains a bunch of water falls and deep ponds. They look great for swimming.
On the walk out we opted to walk in the stream around the dunes instead of over. We saw a number of fish and a baby eel in this stream.
It’s a place all Aucklanders should go and go check out, it’s so close and so beautiful.
They don’t look that happy but they are π
